Washdown - Parking Lot of Gateway North Shopping Center
Monday, January 14, 2008

At 1528 units were dispatched for a reported washdown in the parking lot of the Gateway North Shopping Center. E44-4 with 44-18 on board found a tractor trailer that was leaking large amounts of diesel fuel from its dual saddle tanks. The tanks had began to leak while on Rt. 13 and a large trail of fuel was found leading North on 13 into the shopping center. Approximately 50-75 gallons of fuel were already on the ground on thier arrival. Crews from 44-4 & R-44 layed down spill booms around the storm water drains, and assisted with siphoning the rest of the fuel from the tanks, approximately 55 gallons. Crews also put down large amounts of sta-dri to try and absorb some of the leakage. 44-18 requested DelDot for a sand truck due to the fuel running out onto Rt. 13 and causing slippery conditions. One lane of Rt. 13 needed to be shut down to the bad conditions. A represenative of the shopping center was also contacted in order to get sand spread on the entire parking lot and entrance. 44-18 turned over the scene to DNREC and DelDot. Units were back in the station @ 1647. Units were assisted by Smyrna PD, DNREC, and DelDot. OIC was Capt. Tate Coulbourne, and the CHC had 41 members respond.
