The officers and members of the Citizens' Hose Co. would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Michelle Smith, and the officers and members of the Delaware City Fire Co. Smith, 29, was an active member of the department, and was driving the ambulance the night the incident occured. The following is an exert from the Delaware City Fire Co.'s website:
"New Castle, DE – At 9:52 pm on Saturday evening, a Delaware City Basic Life Support Unit responded to a collision involving a motorcycle on DuPont Highway and School Lane in the vicinity of the New Castle County Airport. Delaware City was providing ambulance coverage for the Wilmington Manor Fire Company. Upon arrival, and initial assessment of the patient, Ambulance Driver Michelle Smith, 29, was assisting the EMT on scene with patient care. A NCC Police Officer stopped to assist with traffic control, as rescue and fire police units from Wilmington Manor began to arrive.
A vehicle that attempted to avoid the incident scene struck the County Police vehicle and then swerved around the Delaware City BLS unit, striking Ms. Smith. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene."
Michelle later succumbed to her inuries early Monday morning while at the Christiana Hospital.
We again would like to extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to all who knew Michelle, and all others affected by her death.
