Torres returns from fighting wildfires out west - Grantsville, Utah & Santa Maria, California
Tuesday, August 25, 2009
Firefighter Tyler Torres along with the Delaware Wildland Firefighting crews from the Blackbird State Forest Unit returned on August 23rd after battling wildfires in Utah and California for about 14 days. The crews were initially sent to battle fires in Alaska, but due to harsh conditions the crews were redirected to assist at the Big Pole Fire in Grantsville Utah. The crew spent two days in Utah mopping-up and cold-trailing their division. With the 44,000 acre fire almost contained, the Delaware Crew, along with crews from PA, MD, OH, and WV were then requested in Santa Maria, California for the developing La Brea Fire. It took the module a day to reach California. The rest of the eleven days, Tyler and the Delaware Crew worked in different branches and divisions to help contain the fire. The crew performed everything from burn-out operations to mop-up operations. The crew departed from California and returned home Sunday, August 23rd, 2009. The La Brea Fire burnt 90,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest. Tyler is 1 of 20 members on the Delaware Wildland Firefighting crew that was sent out west.
