Working House Fire - 303 W. Commerce St., Smyrna
Saturday, April 24, 2010

At 1550 Sta. 44 along with Sta. 45 for the Quint, and EMS units were dispatched for a reported house fire, with possible subjects trapped just 2 block from the station. Within one minute Rescue 1(Volunteer Hose of Middletown, which was on a pre-arranged stand-by for our station) hit the street and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor and the attic area. While R-1's crew was pulling thier handlines, E44-2 under command of Lt. Jarrell(44-21) arrived and laid a 5" supply line to R-1. The crew from R-1 then made an aggressive attack on the fire in the second floor bedroom. The crew of 44-2 stretched a second 1 1/2" handline from R-1 and went up to assist with suppression. On arrival of Quint 45 crews were assigned to assist with the primary search, and place thier ladder into service onto the roof for ventilation. The crew of 44-3 assisted with water supply from 44-2 to R-1 with a 3" supply line. After the fire was knocked down, crews performed a primary and secondary search with negative results. The crew from Quint 45 then put a vent hole in the roof. 44-21 placed the scene under control at 1627 with all units working. The quick response and aggressive attack by crews from R-1 and 44-2 limited the fire damage to the bedroom and hallway area. The second floor sustained smoke and heat damage, and the first floor sustained some smoke and water damage. Crews remained on scene for about 2 more hours overhauling, assisting FM-13, and closing up the windows and vent hole with plastic for the residents. All 44 units, and R-1 were back in quarters at 1818. Crews were in service for 2 hours and 28 minutes, and 47 members responded. Units responding: E44-2, E44-3, R-44, L44, 44-10, R-1, Q-45, 45-3, B64, ERU 64, KM6, FM-13, TOS electric, & SPD. OIC was Lt.
