Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony - Smyrna Municipal Park
Monday, May 27, 2013
The CHC and Clayton Fire Companies united and marched together during the annual Smyrna/Clayton Memorial Day Parade through Smyrna on their way to the Smyrna Municipal Park for the annual Memorial Day observance ceremonies. This year the ceremony was put together by several CHC members, Ceremony Chairman Past Chief Tate Coulbourne, FF Grant Nash, and FF Tom Emerson IV. All three members are veterans of the armed forces and have all served overseas during war times. This years keynote speaker was the honorable Senator Thomas Carper, who is also a retired Navy Veteran. He spoke about his time in the service and about the service of the men and women of our country who have or are currently serving. Following Senator Carpers address, members of the community presented flags to the memorial committee which will be flown throughout the year at the memorial at the park. Flags of the USA, state, all branches of the armed forces, and the POW/MIA were presented. During the ceremony the band from the CHC played patriotic music, and the anthems for each of the US military services. Prior to concluding taps and a 21 gun salute were performed to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
