Grain dryer fire in silo - 920 Flemings Landing Rd.
Sunday, June 30, 2013
At 1138 the CHC, along with Tanker Co. 53(Leipsic) and Amb. 64, were dispatched to 920 Flemings Landing Rd., the Wilson Farm, for a reported grain dryer in a silo on fire. E44-4 under command of 44-17(Jarrell) responded within minutes followed shortly by T44, 44-3, L44, and R44. While en-route units were advised by Kent Center that the farm owner had already shut off the gas to the dryer unit, and had extinguished the fire using garden hoses, but still wanted the FD to respond. E4 arrived and found nothing evident from the silo units, 44-17 assumed command. All other units were advised to stage on Flemings Landing Rd., and send their crews up to the scene. Hand lines were pulled from E4 and a supply line was laid out to T-44 in case during overhaul operations any of the product or grain dryer flared up. After speaking with the farm owners and employees it was determined that crews would assist in removing all the grain from the dryer area to make sure there were still no smoldering areas or hot spots inside the deep grain. Crews from both 44 & 53 along with heavy machinery moved all the grain from the area until it was found there were no hot spots or smoldering grain left in the pile or unit. After all the product was moved and searched, 44-17 placed the scene under control and all unit cleared. The scene was TOT the farm owner. FM 19 was contacted via cell phone to advise of the situation, and no response was needed by the DSFMO.
Units responding: E44-4, T44, E44-3, L44, R44, 44-10, T53-7, E53-5, FM 19, B & D 64.
OIC was 2nd Asst. Chief Brian Jarrell.
