Officer Call for Odor in Building - 16 E Mount Vernon St.
Friday, February 7, 2014
At 1630, Kent Center called the station hot line to see if any available officers were in. With 3 officers in station and a few black hats hanging out from an earlier alarm, they advised that a woman was just at the Salvation Army and smelled a strange odor inside the store on E. Mt Vernon St. Crews took Engine 2 over to investigate. Once crews got on scene, they could smell a strong odor of heating oil in the back area of the store. The store personnel advised that they have just received a load of heating oil a few days before and started to smell a odor afterwards. The oil tank was found at the back of the building, built into the loading dock. Crews did a quick look at the tank and found that it has a rust hole on the top of it, which caused some of the heating oil to leak out under the back of the store. DNREC was notified of the leak and had a officer make a response due to the amount of oil spilled. Once the DNREC officer had arrived all 44 units returned to station. 44-23 (Lt. Neeld) had Command.
