MVC South Dupont Blvd & Hickory Ridge Rd
Saturday, March 27, 2021

On March 27 at 1707 the CHC was dispatched for a MVC with injuries at South Dupont Blvd. & Hickory Ridge Rd. Shortly after dispatch the call was upgraded to entrapment adding Cheswold Volunteer Fire Company  for the additional rescue company, and ALS from Kent County Department of Public Safety  and Delaware State Police Aviation Section T4. While en-route Kent Center advised they were getting reports of a vehicle on top of the guy wire for an electrical pole with the driver still trapped. Command requested Sta. 43 respond with the Special Operations units for its large stabilization rescue struts instead of R43.

Upon arrival Command found a 2 vehicle MVC with one vehicle up the guy wire as reported with the driver still inside. A43 reported the driver to be very stable and with minor injuries. Upon arrival of R44 and 44-4, crews began stabilization of the unstable and precariously perched vehicle by utilizing cribbing and our large and small Junkyard Dog Rescue Struts, and placing a handline in service for precaution. Once the struts from R44 were in place and the vehicle cribbed, 43-1 arrived and assisted with placing thier heavy duty Paratech Struts in place to further stabilize and support the vehicle so the driver could be removed. Once the vehicle was fully stabilized the driver was able to be assisted from the vehicle by rescue crews and extrication was complete at 1730. She was transported to a local ER for evaluation.  During the extrication/stabilization process, crews from B-53, B64, & KM6 treated the driver of the other vehicle for serious injuries and transported him to a LZ where the patient was transferred to DSP T4 for transport to the Level 1 Trauma Center @ Christiana. 44-0 assisted at the LZ. Command placed the scene under control holding all units. Units remained on scene to assist McKinney's Towing & Road Service LLC while they removed the vehicle from the guy wire. All units were clear the scene by 1830.

Capt. Isaac Hankins, 44-18, had the Smyrna Command.

Units responding: Command Unit 44-9, R44, E44-4, 44-0, 43-1, A-43, B-53, B-64, KM6, T4, DSP, DelDot, & 44&45 Fire Police
