Tuesday, April 27, 2010
At 2337 Sta. 44 units along with Amb. 64, KM-6, & T-4 were dispatched a MVC reported with subjects trapped and in the water. E44-4 under command of 44-17(Hankins) responded quickly, with R-44 shortly after. While en-route units were advised the driver was still trapped in his car, with the water up to his neck. 44-4 arrived at 2350 and found the elderly driver c/o minor injuries but trapped inside the car due to the high water level. Crews from 44-4 & R-44 removed all the windows, and then utilized the Hurst Rescue tools to cut the A, B, & C posts. Once the posts were cut the roof was flapped, and the pt was then removed from the vehicle at 0004. He was then packaged by EMS crews and transported to KGH by B-64 and KM-6. All 44 units were back in quarters by 0026. Units were in service for 49 minutes, and 41 members responded.
The driver had apparently lost control of the car due to the flooded roadway, and went off into the large tidal marsh area. On arrival the water level was up to the window sill, and as unit were leaving the scene, the water level was almost covering the entire car. The vehicle was spotted by a passer-by on his way to work.
