Passing of Honorary Member Capt. Larry DuHadaway - Clayton, DE

The officers and members of the Citizens' Hose Company mourns the loss of Honorary Member Larry DuHadaway Sr., or as he was better known to all as Capt. Larry. He was given Honorary Membership to the Citizens' Hose Company for his many years of dedicated service to the CHC as an assisting Firepoliceman from Sta. 45. Capt. Larry was a great friend to the CHC and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The following was taken from Clayton Fire Company's website about the life of and services for Capt. Larry. Capt. Larry had been involved in the fire service for 64 years. Capt Larry began his fire service career as a volunteer with the Christaina Fire Company and quickly found his calling. He joined the City of Wilmington Fire Dept in 1950 where he served as a firefighter 1st Class assigned to Engine Company's 6 & 8 until 1958. He was instrumental in helping establish the Wilmington Fire Department's Marine Rescue Units in its early days including Marine Unit #7. After leaving the Wilmington Fire Department Capt. Larry stayed busy with several volunteer departments including Christaina Fire Company where he was a Life Member and served as an Assistant Chief Engineer. After moving to Sussex County Capt. Larry joined the Indian River Fire Company where he served as an Assistant Fire Chief. In the Mid 1990's Capt Larry moved to his final home in Clayton where he lived until his death. After joining the Clayton Fire Company. Capt. Larry quickly became active helping with everything around the firehouse from responding to calls, fund raising, attending parades but more importantly serving as a mentor to the many up and coming young members of the department. Capt. Larry also was a member at one time or another with the Holloway Terrace and the Atena Hose Hook & Ladder of Newark. Quick with a story Capt. Larry could sit for hours and talk about the good ole days. Capt Larry retired from his active service in 2011 as his health declined but he was always available for any member who needed a shoulder to learn on or a ear to bend. Capt Larry served numerious years as a fire policeman until he stepped down in 2011 and was named Honorary Life Fire Policeman for the company in 2011. He is a prior award winner of the companies Firefighter of the Year Award. He was a Life member of the company at the time of his death. For his years of service to the Citizens Hose Company as a fire policemen Capt Larry was named an Honorary Member of the Citizens Hose Company of Smyrna. Capt Larry was also a member of organizations outside the fire service; He was a 32 degree Mason with Hiram Lodge #25 -Christaina, served as a councilman for the Town of Clayton. Capt Larry loved the water most of all, he loved anything with the water and boats and spent years sailing up and down the east coast. Capt Larry was not the only member of his family to join the fire service . His son Larry Jr is a Life Member of the Christaina Fire Company, His grandson Larry III (Bub) DuHadway is a member and Past Chief of the Christaina Fire Co. Bub is currently is a paid firefighter in Maryland. His daughter Holly Sharp is also involved in the fire service. Capt. Larry lived in Clayton with his companion Jan Coulbourne. Arraingements will be posted once the family has completed them. Please keep Capt Larry, Jan, and the whole DuHadaway family in your thoughts and prayers. ****Services for Capt. Larry are as follow's: There will be a viewing on Tuesday March 26, 2013 where family and friends can call from 5pm to 9pm in the Clayton Fire Company's William R. "Ace" Carrow Memorial Hall at 214 Railroad Ave. Clayton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 30, 2013 at the Clayton Fire Company's William R. "Ace" Carrow Memorial Hall starting at 11am, friends may call from 10:00am-11;00am. Burial will be immediately following at Silver Brook Cemetery and Memorial Park at 3300 Lancaster Pike in Wilmington. This will a fireman's funeral. Any company wishing to send a piece of equipment to the funeral on Saturday March 30 is to contact Deputy Chief Robert Davis at 302-222-4678. ********* CHC members planning on attending the viewing, please meet at Sta. 44 on Tue. @ 1830, and we will leave at 1845 and go over as a unit. We will also be meet at 1030 on Sat. and leave at 1045 to go over to Sta. 45 for the funeral services. Anyone attending either service please wear full Class A uniform with mourning band on your badge.
