Working House fire with civilian injuries - 2211 Big Oak Road
Thursday, February 10, 2011

At 1500 Sta. 44 along with Amb. 64 and KM-6 were dispatched to 2211 Big Oak Rd. for a reported working house fire with injuries. Engine 44-2 under command of 2nd Asst. Chief Hankins responded within a minute with a full crew, followed shortly after by 44-3, L44, T44, R44, & 44-4. While en-route a large column of smoke was visible from a distance. Kent Center advised all occupants were out of the house, and one subject had burns. On arrival 44-17 found a single family 1 1/2 story house with heavy fire throughout the entire first floor, and a partial roof collapse over the garage and part of the kitchen and dining area. Crews stretched a 1 3/4" line to the front of the house to attack the fire, and an 1 1/2" line to the rear to protect a exposure to a large propane tank with direct fire impingement. A 5" supply line was also hand stretched to the street to be supplied by T-44. On arrival of 44-3 crews pulled 2 more handline to the front of the structure for attack. Due to the heavy fire and already deteriorated conditions a defensive attack was ordered. 44-15 assumed command and 44-17 was in charge of operations in the rear of the structure. Upon arrival of L44, R44, and 44-4, crews assisted with placing ground ladders on all sides of the structure, securing the utilities, and assisting with suppression. Sta. 53 was requested for a Tanker, Engine, and Rescue, and Sta. 45 was also requested to the scene for an Engine and Rescue for manpower. Tanker 44 & 53 supplied 44-2 & 44-3. Crews operated 5 handlines to attack and knock down the fire. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews were able to go inside and begin pulling walls and ceilings to expose hot spots. Entensive overhaul operations were performed for an extended period of time. 44-15 placed the scene under control at 1719 with all units working. Crews remained on scene for another hour finishing up overhaul operations, and getting units back into service. The scene was TOT the DSFMO for further investigation. The homeowner was treated at the scene for minor burns and smoke inhalation by A-64 & KM-6, and refused transport to the ER. The Red Cross was notified and responded to the scene for 2 adults and 3 children. The home sustained heavy fire damage to the entire first floor, and garage, and water damage to the basement/living area. CHC units were in service for 3 hours and 38 minutes, and had 58 members respond to assist. OIC was Fire Chief Tate Coulbourne, 44-15. Units on-scene: E44-2, E44-3, E44-4, L44, R44, T44, 44-10, 44-8, R45, 45-3, T53-7, R53, 53-2, A & B 64, KM-6, FM 12, FM 13, FM 19, FM 28, & The American Red Cross. Special thanks to Sta. 43 & 27 for providing a cover-up at Sta. 44 while units were on scene. During thier cover-up units responded to 2 field/marsh fires in the district.
