Tuesday, January 27, 2009

At 1834 on Tuesday Jan. 27th, CHC units were dispatched to a reported building fire at Colonial Motors on duPont Blvd. With several crews in the station, units were on the street within minutes. E44-2 under command of Chief Embert responded at 1836 and was on scene at 1838. Chief Embert reported heavy smoke showing from the front. Crews from E-2 advanced two 1 3/4" handlines into the structure. While crews were attacking the fire, the crew from L-44 threw ground ladders, and began ventilating the roof and windows. E44-3 laid in from a nearby hydrant and supplied E-2. Rescue 44's crew assisted with shutting off the utilities, ventilation, and extinguishment. Crews were able to put a quick stop on the bulk of the fire, but extensive overhaul was needed due to the fire extending into the attic and cockloft area. Chief Embert placed the scene under control at 1903, but crews remained on scene for about another hour for overhaul and assisting FM 13 with lighting. All crews were back in station at 2016. OIC was Chief John Embert. Units responding: E44-2, L44, E44-3, R44, 44-8, B-64, FM-13, Smyrna PD, and Town of Smyrna Electric Dept. Sta. 53 provided an engine cover for the station while crews were on the fire scene.
