Thursday, February 25, 2010

At 1633 the CHC along with Amb. 64, Amb. 26, KM 5&6, and Trooper 4 were dispatched to the 5500 block of N. DuPont Pkwy, in the area of the Smyrna Rest Area, for a MVC with entrapment. E44-4 under command of Asst. Chief Hankins responded within 2 minutes. While en-route Kent Center advised an off duty PD officer was on scene reporting heavy entrapment and a possible DOA. Upon arrival crews found a 2 vehicle MVC with a mid-sized SUV ontop of a small 4 door sedan. The driver of the SUV was still inside of the vehicle and required stabilization before being extricated. The two occupants of the small car were both heavily entrapped and were found to be P4. Crews from 44-4, R44, & 44-10 stabilized the SUV with cribbing and hi-low jacks. After the SUV was stabilized BLS and ALS crews entered the vehicle and stabilized the pt, and with assistance were able to extricate the pt at 1652. The pt was placed in A-64 and treated until arrival of T-4. Pt was then transferred to T-4 for transport to CER as a trauma alert. The two occupants of the car were pronounced at 1700 by KM-5. 44-17 placed the scene under control at 1731. Crews remained on scene and assisted until arrival of the ME's office for extrication of the final two pts. After the ME arrived and performed his investigation the two pts from the car were extricated. In order to remove the pts, a wrecker was called in to pull the SUV off the car, and then Hurst rescue tools were used to remove the doors, and roof, and rams to roll the dash forward. The passenger was extricated at 1936, and driver at 2002. Once both pts were removed, 44 units were placed available. Rescue 44 remained on scene for about an extra 30 minutes to assist DSP with the light tower for thier investigation. All units were in quarters at 2054. CHC units were in service for 4 hours & 21 minutes, and had 55 members respond and assist. OIC was 2nd Asst. Chief Isaac J. Hankins.
